Solar lighting for shelters and storage containers

Need lighting where a 240V supply is difficult or costly to reach? Solar lighting offers a practical option for bus shelters, outdoor crib areas and remote storage spaces.

The IQL Solar Shelter Light combines a separate solar panel, built-in battery and LED fitting to provide lighting without a mains power connection. It is an option worth considering for mining operations, councils, utilities and businesses looking to illuminate sheltered areas away from existing electrical infrastructure.

Where could solar lighting work for you?

  • Mining: bus pick-up shelters, outdoor crib areas and sheltered staff waiting points.
  • Councils: bus shelters, park picnic shelters and community rest areas.
  • Utilities: depot shelters, remote facility rest areas and sheltered crew assembly points.
  • Storage containers: internal lighting for shipping containers and site storage, with the solar panel mounted outside in sunlight. Panel-to-light cable length, routing and operating mode need to be checked for the installation.

A practical off-grid lighting package

A 30W bifacial solar panel charges the fitting's built-in LiFePO₄ battery. The light offers 4W/6W LED settings and 3000K/4000K colour temperature options, with wall, bracket and suspension mounting options to suit different installations.

Three operating modes give you a choice of how the light runs, including a timed mode, a dusk-to-dawn setting and an energy-saving mode that uses reduced light levels and returns to full brightness when motion is detected.

The right mode depends on when the area is used and how much sunlight the panel receives. Overnight runtime will vary with weather, charging conditions and the selected settings.

IK10+ impact resistance: built to take a knock

An IK rating describes how well a fitting's enclosure resists physical knocks and impacts. IQL lists this fitting as IK10+, indicating a high level of impact resistance for demanding environments.

In plain terms, it is a tough fitting designed to resist damage from knocks and blows — a useful feature around work sites and public spaces. Its IP65 weather protection and powder-coated die-cast aluminium construction also support outdoor use. Impact resistance does not mean the fitting is indestructible.

Will it suit your site?

Before choosing a solar lighting solution, consider:

  • Sunlight: can the panel be positioned clear of shade from roofs, trees and nearby structures?
  • Lighting needs: what area needs to be lit, and for how many hours each night?
  • Mounting and cable routing: where will the panel and fitting be installed, and which accessories are required?
  • Container installations: confirm the supplied cable can reach from the external panel to the internal fitting, with a suitable weatherproof cable entry.
  • Operating mode: check that the dusk, timer and motion behaviour matches when you need light, particularly inside a container.
